A Akimmer is a device that is utilized by fraudsters to blend into credit card machines and steal people’s financial information, according to the FBI.

“The specific device used is often a realistic-looking card reader placed over the factory-installed card reader,” the FBI said.

“Customers insert their ATM card into the phony reader, and their account info is swiped and stored on a small attached laptop or cell phone or sent wirelessly to the criminals waiting nearby.”

The store confirmed that the device they found was pretty advanced, with it placed on the “tap” portion of the reader, according to Central Oregon Dailey.

Most skimmers are found on the swipe portion of the card reader and could be easily taken off if you pull it.

Since finding the device, the store filed a report with the police about the incident.

Customers are warned to check their accounts if they have visited the 7-Eleven recently.

What is a skimmer device?

A skimmer device is a fraud tool designed to steal sensitive information from credit or debit cards during transactions.

  • Imagine a skimmer device as a sneaky thief that hides on ATMs or card machines.
  • Its job is to secretly steal your credit or debit card information when you use it for a transaction.
  • These devices are like tiny spies that can copy your card details, including the card number and PIN, without you even realizing it.
  • Skimmers can be cleverly disguised to look just like the regular card reader, making them hard to spot.
  • Once they have your information, bad guys can use it to make fake cards or buy things without your permission, causing a lot of trouble and stress.
  • It’s important to always be cautious and check for anything unusual on card machines before using them to protect yourself from these sneaky devices.

In New York, Police have had a similar issue after they caught two men on camera placing skimmers in a 7-Eleven in East Patchogue, New York.

The skimmer was said to be on a card machine for three weeks before anyone noticed.

Authorities have not made an arrest but police are currently looking for who they believe did this, according to the cable channel News 12 Long Island

In photos released to the station, one man was shown wearing a black graphic t-shirt with a matching jacket over it, while his accomplice was wearing a black hoodie with a green plaid jacket.

To combat the recent issues, 7-Eleven had decided to up their anti-theft measures to combat the scamming,

“Anytime there is money involved, somebody always finds a way to get that illegally,” Vincent Emmanuel, Delaware Valley 7-Eleven Franchise Owners Association spokesman, told CBS.

This includes adding more surveillance systems, better ATM coverage, and updated daily tasks including checking for ATM and card readers.

“As a company, we have instructed all our franchises and employees to look out for this kind of operation,” said Emmanuel.
