In a recent interview I conducted here, and which is embedded below, Thompson says too many teams treat AI as pure cost takeout. “You can’t cut your way to being a Fortune 500 company,” he said, quoting a CEO he once worked for. “The company that yields the best ROI also improves the revenue side, customer service, SLAs, on-time delivery. Those sometimes have a factor of 10x versus cost takeout.”

And the token point loops back to context: if you’re spending tokens to rebuild a context model every time your systems change, “we auto-generate that out of an API without spending any tokens. Take that money and go build agentic AI solutions instead.”
