A WALMART customer has been praised by other shoppers for shutting down a receipt check with a simple question.
A video showed two shoppers in Dundalk, Maryland, talking to police and Walmart employees after they appeared to refuse to show their receipts.
“He’s not even a part of this; he didn’t even buy anything,” the frustrated shopper told the cop in the footage posted by activist account the Baltimore County Observer.
“Shopkeeper’s privilege states that you can be detained if you have a reasonable belief of shoplifting,” she added.
“Failure to provide a receipt does not mean I am shoplifting.”
The cops claimed that the cashier did not remember ringing them up.

The couple told the officer that they were using self-checkout and that the cashier was only clearing off the kiosk so they could scan their items.
“Go check the cameras,” the male shopper told the Walmart employees, who still did not believe him.
“What am I being detained for?” repeated the female shopper multiple times to the cop, who could not provide her with an answer.
“What reason do you have to believe that I was stealing?

“When did I put stuff in my pockets?” as she pointed to her pants, “which I don’t have; I have no pockets.”
The cop still did not let them pass.
“Did you witness me not pay?” repeated the female shopper to the cop multiple times.
The cop did not respond.
“You did not witness me fail to pay?” she asked the cop, who did not answer her still.
Users in the comments were outraged on behalf of the shoppers.
“She’s 100% correct in everything she said in this video,” commented a user.
“Cop needs to learn the law in order to keep his job,” said another.
“Being accused of a crime and being deprived of the precious commodity known as time is no small inconvenience,” said a third.
The U.S. Sun has previously reported on the details of shopkeeper’s privilege, such as how long a person can be detained and on what grounds.
Shopkeeper’s privilege is the right of store owners or merchants to detain a customer if they have probable cause.
In other words, this law favors Walmart if its cause for stopping a customer is on reasonable grounds.
