Walmart customer goes viral after being filmed ‘stealing’ at self-checkout – but some shoppers say it isn’t how it seems

Minnesota shoplifting bust narrowly thwarts potential mass-shooting planned by suspect: ‘Deathtoamerikka’

A VIRAL video captured a man casually bagging up a cart full of items without scanning a single one.

The act seemed like he was orchestrating a bold theft at Walmart and left viewers shocked.

Walmart has been cracking down on anti-theft measures recently with receipt checks adding an extra shock factor.

The video was posted by a user on X, formerly Twitter, Crime Net (@triggerhappyv1) on Monday.

“Man doesn’t scan a single item at Walmart,” the caption of the video said.

The surprising act caught a lot of attention with millions of views.

There was also a mixed response over the alleged stealing in the replies.

“Theeeere goes my hero,” one user said.

“I see no crimes committed,” another user said.

An annoyed Walmart shopper replied to the video and suggested this could be avoided with more cashiers

“They should cancel these self-checkout things and add more cashiers. I would like more co-workers and more customers to talk to tbh,” they said.

Another replier insisted the act was not a good idea because there would be no way to avoid being caught on camera.

“Wait till y’all find out there’s cameras on those things and they’re just gonna wait till you hit a super illegal amount so they can arrest you,” they replied.

SCAN & GO

The video might have been misleading as well, a former Walmart employee said in a reply.

There is the option to use Scan & Go at some Walmarts where bagging up items without scanning each of them is normal.

“Former Walmart employee here, he’s not stealing. He used Scan & Go,” the user explained.

“Look at the screen. It’s a feature where you scan the items with your phone as you shop and then pay with the app. He bought the the items.”

Another user caught on as well and said, “You can scan and pay for stuff with your phone while you’re shopping at Walmart.”

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Walmart describes Scan & Go as a timely resource for its shoppers.

“Shop and checkout with your phone in-store,” Walmart said explaining Scan & Go on its website.

“It’ll save you time and it’s contact-free.

“Just scan, pay, and be on your way!”
