POLICE confirmed that two people have died following a shooting at a Walmart.
Investigators are looking into a deadly shooting that happened Thursday afternoon in Durango, Colorado, about five hours outside of Colorado Springs.
The gunman is said to have shot one woman and then turned the gun on himself.
The Durango police department said that the situation is contained and there is no ongoing threat to the public, according to a post on Facebook.
Police confirmed five hours after the shooting that two people had died.
“The male subject and female victim involved in today’s shooting near Walmart in Durango have both died at the hospital,” the police department wrote.

“The male is believed to have shot the female before turning the firearm on himself. If you witnessed the incident or saw anything beforehand, please contact Durango Police at 970-385-2900.

The police department initially posted that officers were on the scene investigating the situation.
“Our officers are currently on scene at the 1100 block of south Camino Del Rio in response to a reported shooting,” the Durango police department wrote Thursday afternoon. “Officers and emergency personnel are actively working the scene.”
“At this time, initial information indicates that two individuals have been injured. The situation appears contained, and there is no known ongoing threat to the public.
“We ask the public to avoid the area so first responders can work safely. Additional confirmed details will be released as soon as they are available.”
The police department posted again on Friday afternoon, sharing its condolences with the community.
“Durango Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim in yesterday’s tragic incident at the 1100 block of South Camino Del Rio. We cannot imagine the depth of your loss, and our thoughts remain with you during this incredibly difficult time,” the department wrote.
“We also recognize the trauma experienced by witnesses, employees, and bystanders who were present. Events like this leave a lasting impact — please know that resources are available, and your well-being matters to us.”
One Facebook commenter mentioned that her DoorDash driver allegedly saw a couple fighting prior to the shooting.
“The doordasher that came into my store in the plaza just now told me it was a couple that got into an argument or something and shots were fired,” commenter Hailey Walton wrote under the police department’s post.

Other Walmart shoppers said they saw police swarming the area.
“We literally were getting milk when this was going down and cops started piling in and we didn’t know what was going on,” one commenter wrote.
Durango, Colorado, is a small city with a population of 19,500 located near the New Mexico border, known for its historic railroad.
The historic city is said to be safer than nine percent of all US cities, according to FBI statistics.
The shooting comes just months after a man opened fire in a Walmart in Atlanta, Georgia, leaving two people dead.
The gunman was believed to be a store employee who was working at the retailer in April when he went outside to grab a handgun, Atlanta News First reported.
After grabbing the gun, he reportedly went inside and shot and killed one of his coworkers.

Police say he shot another employee, leaving him in critical condition.
The suspect then fled the Walmart and went down the road, broke into a woman’s home who was also an employee at the retailer, and killed her, police reported.
