‘The country is doomed,’ say Walmart shoppers – but they disagree on extreme anti-theft measures used to combat stealing

A TWEET has gone viral after it depicted Walmart’s new anti-theft measures on jugs of oil.

An X, formally known as Twitter, user (@machineiv) posted a picture of locked oil jugs at their local Walmart which caused an outrage on the social media platform.

“I had to go to Walmart,” the tweet read.

“They’ve put locks on all of the cooking oil,

“This country is f***ing doomed.”

The image showed canola oil and vegetable oil on a shelf locked together with another oil of the same kind.

Another user retweeted the post with a comment saying: “The country is doomed… because Walmart is tired of retail theft?

“Not doomed because retail is so pervasive that Walmart needs to lock up the cooking oil?” they continued.

The viral tweet received a slew of varying comments on the image many of them about capitalism.

“Lol. Keep voting blue, this is the result,” said one user.

“How’s that the fault of capitalism,” a second user questioned.

The user who posted the tweet responded to that question saying: “People don’t risk their lives stealing bar essentials if their families’ needs are met.”

“Five years ago the oil wasn’t locked,

“Are you saying five years ago USA wasn’t capitalist, but now it is?” questioned a third user.

Walmart and Target have implemented drastic anti-theft measures this past year that have received endless backlash.

Theft remains a huge issue for Walmart, Doug McMillon Walmart CEO told CNBC Squawk Box.

“It’s higher than what it has historically been,” he added.

He also warned that an increase in shoplifting could lead to increased prices and store closures if the problem persists.

The U.S. Sun previously reported that a Walmart in downtown Atlanta, Georgia will include a police station inside the store.

The store burned down in December 2022, and it was speculated that the fire was started to allow thieves to steal more merchandise, according to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.
