Surveillance captures restaurant burglary in Gwinnett; string of smash-and-grabs under investigation

In the early hours of Sunday, Chamoy’s Restaurant in Tucker, Georgia, became the latest victim in a series of targeted burglaries affecting small businesses across Gwinnett County. Surveillance footage captured four masked individuals forcefully entering the establishment by smashing through the front window. Within minutes, the perpetrators had seized the cash register and tip jar, causing approximately $4,500 in damages.

This incident marks the third time Chamoy’s has been targeted, leaving owner Chamoy Rodriguez and manager Marbin Orellana frustrated. “Four years working hard, but we continue. We continue to work hard for the customer,” Orellana stated.

Gwinnett County Police believe this burglary is connected to a string of similar smash-and-grab incidents in the area. Investigators have recovered a stolen orange Dodge Charger believed to be used in the crimes and are processing it for evidence.

Authorities urge business owners to take preventative measures, such as removing cash from registers and enhancing security systems. “These crews work very quickly to get cash and make sure they are gone before police are able to arrive on the scene,” said Cpl. Ryan Winderweedle of the Gwinnett County Police.

These burglaries highlight a growing concern for restaurant operators. Over 23,000 restaurant burglaries occur in U.S. each year, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced physical security measures. Investing in high-security safes is an important first step in protecting assets.
