The outdoor and sporting goods chain is closing nearly half of its stores across the country.
WASHINGTON — Outdoor gear retailer Orvis plans to close nearly half of its retail locations nationwide in the coming months, the company confirmed on Friday.
Orvis President Simon Perkins said in a statement that the sporting goods retailer will close 31 stores and five outlets in early 2026. The company, which was founded in 1856, currently has 64 stores and seven outlets in at least 28 states.
“Since 1856, Orvis has inspired generations of adventure in the field and on the water. Guided by that same purpose, we are entering an exciting new chapter by returning to our roots and sharpening our focus on the pursuits at the heart of our heritage: fly fishing and wingshooting,” Perkins said in a statement. “This focus is about more than products — it’s about ensuring Orvis continues to lead in innovation, serve our angling and upland communities, and protect the wild places we love.”
Perkins also noted that like many in retail, “Orvis’ business model faced a sizeable shift with the introduction of an unprecedented tariff landscape.”
While the sporting goods chain is closing nearly half of its stores, it will continue to be supported by more than 550 independent dealers and several national outdoor retailers across the country.
“We will be concentrating on a more focused retail store portfolio, as well as brick-and-mortar opportunities through our valued dealer network,” Perkins explained.
The company has yet to release a list of which 36 locations are going to be closing, but said there would be substantial savings at the closing stores.
“Orvis is proud of what we’ve built together and energized for what’s ahead. For nearly 170 years, our customers have trusted Orvis as their outfitter for gear and adventure on the water and in the field, and that commitment will remain our compass as we build for the next 170 years,” Perkins said.
