Online retailers remove dangerous extension cord listings amid various safety recalls

The extension cords pose electrocution and fire risk since one sides exposed prongs can become energized when the other end is plugged in, according to the notice.

Retailers like Walmart, eBay and AliExpress agreed to remove listings of blue, red or yellow extension cords with two male ends (the part that plugs into something like an outlet) with a three-prong black plug that were manufactured in China, according to the CPSC.

“Male-to-male extension cords, often referred to as ‘suicide cords,’ pose a serious risk of fire and electrocution and have no legitimate household use,” said CPSC Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman. “CPSC has warned consumers about these hazards for years. We are now taking the next step by securing delisting commitments from e-commerce platforms to remove these dangerous products from the marketplace.”

There have been at least eight recalls associated with these extension cords, totaling at least 3,100 units impacted.

The CPSC urges customers to immediately stop using these extension cords and get rid of them. To safely unplug the cord, avoid touching the exposed prongs.

“The cords are often used to supply power from a generator to a residential electrical system, a dangerous practice known as backfeeding that that can result in serious injury or death from electrocution or fire,” the notice said. “Their short length also increases the likelihood that generators will be operated in enclosed spaces or too close to homes, creating a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.”

The China-based sellers have been “unresponsive” to requests for recall, according to the CPSC.
