SAN FRANCISCO — Arts and craft store Michaels is reviving the brand name of their once competitor and now partner.
Michaels acquired the fabric retailer giant when Joann’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January for the second time in less than a year. The retailer had completed a previous restructuring in April 2024 that saw it delisted from the stock exchange and become a private company.
The “revival” comes in the form of placing signage across all Michaels locations in the United States, Canada and online. They will also sell Joann’s Big Twist yarn brand line, which comes as Michaels has seen a surge in customer interest in fabrics, sewing and yarn following its competitor’s fall.

“It’s hard to lose a store you love. We’re here to help,” the banner reads.
Michaels website now has a “Michaels X JOANN” tab, which leads directly to their fabrics craft page, which includes stuffing and fillings, threads, interfacing and stabilizers, sewing machines, buttons and much more.
“Joann has closed down but your crafting journey doesn’t end here. Joann customers, find your favorite fabrics, yarn and more – All in One Place at Michaels,” the website reads. “
The Irving, Texas-based retailer has rapidly increased their supply, offering fabrics at more than 800 stores and the option to choose from nearly 100,000 fabric styles online. Earlier this year, they offered only 10,000 fabrics online.
Michaels operates more than 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada. The company also owns Artistree, a manufacturer of custom and specialty framing merchandise.
