‘Massive inconvenience,’ cries Walmart shopper at receipt check – after checkout policy change sparks ‘jumbled mess’

A WALMART shopper has blasted the retailer for a policy in a particular section of the store.

The customer explained how they felt receipt checks had affected how much time they spent at Walmart.

Eric (@CaligulaIII) explained how the checkout process had also affected his in-store experience.

Firstly, Eric took a swipe at his store for not having self-checkout areas.

The shopper said this led to a long wait time for a cashier.

“@Walmart Having to wait in line to pay, without self checkouts, then having to wait in another line at the door to have some guy scan three of my items as well as check my receipt is a massive time sink and inconvenience,” Eric wrote in an X, formerly Twitter, post.

His rant continued as he described how he saw the situation at the store’s exit.

“It was a jumbled mess at the door just to leave,” he said.

Receipt checks have been a measure many companies have implemented at their stores to combat retail shrink.

Shrink is an industry term that refers to the loss of items due to theft, damage, or misplacement.

A raft of anti-theft measures have been introduced by retailers across the country to help control the loss they have experienced.

Many stores have changed their approach to using self-checkouts due to this.

Some of the retailer’s locations have removed self-checkout machines altogether.

One branch in Shrewsbury, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, recently announced that it would start the removal process soon.

Walmart’s Global Communications Director, Brian Little, said the decision was made to improve people’s in-store experience.

“The decision was based on several factors, including feedback from associates and customers, shopping patterns, and business needs in this area,” he said.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

“We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the chance to provide more personalized and efficient service.”

Dollar General has made a huge u-turn on its use of self-service kiosks.

The chain has closed most of the self-checkout machines they had installed in around 12,000 locations.

Dollar General’s CEO Todd Vasos announced the rollback in a May earning call.

“Given the ongoing challenge from shrink, we converted approximately 3,000 additional stores away from self-checkout in May, bringing us to approximately 12,000 conversions completed in total,” he said.
