SCHNUCKS announced a new policy that some customers aren’t too happy about.

The St. Louis, Missouri-based supermarket chain Shnucks announced on Thursday that they will be limiting their self-checkout to 10 items or less.

“Starting today, self-checkout lanes in all of our stores will be limited to customers who have 10 items or less to purchase,” the company wrote in a statement per CBS affiliate KMOV.

“Customers with more than 10 items will be redirected to our staffed checkout lanes in order to complete their purchases.”

Schnucks mentioned that their main focus is to improve customer service and develop a seamless checkout experience.

However, the policy was also set in place due to theft in their stores.

“Because self-checkouts are more susceptible to theft, this item limit will help us maintain our costs while keeping the prices lower for our customers,” they wrote.

“When self-checkouts were first introduced, they were intended for smaller orders. Over time, larger orders began moving through self-checkouts, and we are hoping to address that concern,” Schnucks added.

Some customers aren’t too happy with the policy change and shared their opinions about it on X, formerly Twitter.

“Schnucks is limiting self-checkout to ten items or less, even though they’ve also installed cart locking mechanisms, to combat theft.

“I always use the self-checkout, so that’s a total miss for me,” the user (@Just_Me_0123) wrote.

“In the cashier lines you can’t even pick who you want. Dumb!” they added.

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Schnucks for comment.

Schnucks is following in Target‘s footsteps after the big box retailer announced that they too will be limiting their self-checkout to 10 items or less.

Maine-based radio station WCYY revealed that Target stores have seen lines with over 50 people waiting to check out on their busiest days.

As an effort to limit wait times, several Target stores in Maine have changed their self-checkout policy as they are now limited to 10 items or less.

A spokesperson from Target told The U.S. Sun: “At select locations, we are testing self-checkout lanes of 10 items or fewer in order to reduce wait times and better understand guest preferences.”

Just like Schnucks’ policy, Target shoppers are not happy about the new rule that is currently being rolled out at most stores.

“Target’s new 10 item self-checkout limit is trash,” wrote one customer.

“Making people wait in a 20-minute line while 3 of 4 self-checkout registers sit unused the whole time is ridiculous. Straight up never buying 10+ items from there again.”
