A Long Island man pleaded guilty Wednesday to fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend more than 30 times as their 2-year-old child watched, officials said.
Jose William Funes-Zabala, 44, of Roosevelt, stabbed 29-year-old Brenda Guadalupe Alfaro-Alcantara to death in the victim’s Hempstead home on the evening of Oct. 5, 2024 — a day after an order of protection against him expired, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said.
Funes-Zabala went to his ex-girlfriend’s basement apartment around 6 p.m. to visit their son, but the two got into an argument after he learned that Alfaro-Alcantara was dating someone else, prosecutors said.
The argument quickly turned violent. Funes-Zabala stabbed Alfaro-Alcantara approximately 35 times in her bedroom in front of the child. About an hour later, he left the apartment with blood on his face, according to investigators.
He then fled, leaving his young son — uninjured but covered in blood — behind.
“This defendant brutally and repeatedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend more than 30 times in her home during a visit with his son, leaving the two-year-old to watch the gruesome attack and the life drain from his mother’s eyes,” Donnelly said in a statement.
The boy was later found “soaked in” his mother’s blood after Funes-Zabala left him “with his mother’s corpse,” she said. “This was a horrific act of violence that stole a woman’s life and the innocence of a young child. Two lives destroyed because of this defendant’s viciousness and his bruised ego.”
Funes-Zabala was arrested the following day. He was indicted on charges of second-degree murder, child endangerment, and weapons possession and had initially pleaded not guilty to all three counts before changing his plea to guilty Wednesday, online court records show.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 18. Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
