Self-checkouts have become an increasingly controversial aspect of grocery shopping in recent years.

Many customers have complained about wait times or item limits to use them.

Will Redden shared a rant about the technology behind the self-checkout he used.

Redden (@will_redden) told X, formerly Twitter, that he felt the machines had accused him of stealing.

“Hey @kroger, it might be time to have your IT & Development people fix the self checkout AI that thinks I’m trying to steal from you because I’m putting in my KrogerPlus number,” he wrote in the post.

“Sincerely, Myself & the poor employee who had to watch the video footage of me scanning my groceries.”

This angry shopper’s post received a response from Kroger who admitted to acknowledging his fury.

“Thank you so much for providing your feedback, Will!” Kroger wrote.

“We can certainly understand your frustration.

CHECKING OUT

Other Kroger shoppers have complained about different aspects of the infamous self-service kiosks, The U.S. Sun has previously reported.

One disgruntled visitor called for the retailer to “do better” after the machines experienced problems.

This customer said only two cashiers were available while the kiosks had issues.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

“@kroger having only 2 register[s] open that aren’t self checkout is pathetic,” the customer wrote.

“Even the self checkouts are having issues. People are backed up into the aisles waiting to checkout.

Kroger customers have not been the only people to share similar complaints about the effects of self-checkout closures.
