The Kroger fan explained that he often used the Kroger Pickup service, formerly known as ClickList.

Fairbanks said he had placed an order but only realized there was an issue a few days later when he was unable to use his debit card, according to ABC affiliate WCPO-TV.

He explained that he attempted to pay for something at a restaurant for his wife but his bank said he was overdrawn on his account.

This had happened as he was charged $94.05 for his Kroger shop and then $89.80 by Kroger a day later, in September 2021.

Fairbanks said $183.85 was therefore unexpectedly taken out of his account for these groceries.

The customer called Kroger and discovered that this second charge was a temporary debit card hold.

A second shopper told WCPO-TV that she also experienced a similar problem when two charges of over $140 were taken out of her account.

“I have been using this service from the beginning of the pandemic and have only experienced this now,” customer Pat Kincaid said.

Kroger’s website has warned people and explained what this potential charge could be.

“When you place an order, your bank or financial institution puts an authorization hold on your card to confirm the card is valid,” their website has said.

Kroger shopper scoops $1m on lotto but her decision meant almost a third of prize vanished before ever seeing a dollar

“The hold amount is for the estimated total you see on your order confirmation.

“Depending on your bank or financial institution, the hold should be released in 3 to 7 business days.”

A Kroger spokesperson said the chain had made no changes on its end regarding how it charges its pickup service shoppers.

They said the change could have been due to banks potentially holding initial charges for a longer time.

What to do if you’re overcharged

If you are overcharged at a retailer, there are a few ways to get your money back.

If you noticed you were charged more than the advertised or posted price, report it to an employee or manager.

Make sure to keep your receipt to show the price difference.

As a shopper, you are entitled to the lowest advertised, posted or quoted price offered by the store.

If you are charged more than the advertised, posted or quoted a price, report it to the sales clerk right away. If the sales clerk can’t help, speak to the manager.

Stores must honor a posted price, even if the price has expired.

You are also able to dispute charges with your bank if you notice something suspicious on your statement.

According to Los Angeles County Consumer& Business Affairs

Customers were recommended to use credit cards to avoid these fees.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Fairbanks has not been the only shopper to complain about how they have been charged at grocery stores.

One shopper said they had been charged twice for the same item at Walmart, The U.S. Sun has previously reported.

“Learned two important lessons shopping at @Walmart today,” Peek posted on X.

“First, always check your receipt,” he wrote.

“Was charged twice for [the] same item.
