KROGER has confirmed the return of cashiers to one of its self-checkout only stores following backlash from shoppers.
The popular grocery store in Oak Lawn on Cedar Springs, Dallas, has been operating on a self-checkout only basis for years.
Cashiers, however, were returned to the store this week following “customer feedback.”
“We listened closely to customer feedback and made the decision to convert back to hosting staffed checkout lanes at this store,” Kroger said in a statement.
While self-checkout lanes will still be available for customers to use, they will also have the option to check out traditionally with staffers.
It comes after another Korger in Tennessee made the switch to self-checkout only in July last year.

The company made clear at the time, however, that not all stores would be making the switch.
It added that some job titles were changed, but none were eliminated to make the updates.
Kroger, alongside Tom Thumb and Walmart, has the most store locations in North Texas.
These three grocers have both cashiers and self-checkout options for their customers.

Walmart had tested out the self-checkout-only option in a store in Plano in 2021 but reverted back to having both options available.
Kroger is not the only grocer to re-introduce traditional checkout methods to their stores.
The U.S. Sun has previously reported on other major retailers deciding whether or not they should stop implementing self-checkout altogether due to rising theft and increased costs.
Costco and Walmart, for example, have come under fire for their self-checkout policies.
Other shoppers have criticized the company for allegedly having employees scan many items at the self-checkout machine and checking shopper’s receipts immediately after.
Self-checkout lanes were originally introduced with the intention of speeding up customer transactions and limiting customer-staff interactions.
However, self-checkout has now fallen victim to over-surveillance, infringement on the customer’s rights, and unjust policing.
Major retailers have scaled back their self-checkout options; Target has created a 10-item limit for their self-checkout lanes in some of their locations.

While some customers have called for an end to self-checkout, others have reported they still enjoy the checkout option.
