‘I’m still banned,’ boasts Walmart shopper fed up with receipt checks – he refuses to comply and the law is on his side

A SHOPPER has been banned from Walmart for not showing his receipt after checking out — and others are fed up too.

Walmart customers have faced a dizzying array of changes to the in-store shopping experience ever since the national retailer began rolling out self-checkout machines years ago.

Now some shoppers are tired of the problems they say are caused by the kiosks, such as accidental scans, theft accusations — and especially receipt checking.

Many customers have critiqued receipt checks, which require employees to double-check a shopper’s receipts at the door to make sure they have rung up everything correctly.

Receipt checks have proliferated alongside self-checkout machines as a way to discourage theft at several big retail chains.

But for some Walmart goers, the added step to exiting the store is just too much.

“I’m still banned from my local Walmart for not showing my receipt,” Brother Mouzone’s Protege (@_Derrt) wrote in a post on Thursday on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

He shared the comment in response to another post bashing receipt checks.

“Dear @Walmart, NO. You can never check my receipt,” Fitzgerald (@ChrisBarnettII) wrote.

“After I ring up $250 worth of groceries in self-checkout because none of the cashiers are open, don’t harass me by asking to see my receipt,” he said.

The post seemed to resonate with a few X users who also had negative feedback for Walmart.

“Bro nor do their cashiers/employees have good customer service,” another user commented.

“Amen,” a second person said.

WALMART UNDER FIRE

With millions of customers and hundreds of thousands of workers, Walmart’s receipt-checking policies affect a lot of people.

“Walmart is a complete joke,” wrote another angry shopper on X.

“Every time I go in the store and pay with my hard worked (60 hours a week) money, I’m treated like a damn criminal when I leave,” he continued.

“I refuse to shop in this store because of it, and I refuse to stop for any employee to show my receipt.”

Top 5 receipt checking tips from a lawyer

Camron Dowlatshahi, a Los Angeles attorney, spoke to The U.S. Sun about receipt checks and customer’s rights and options when it came to being asked to show your receipt.

  1. There has been a lot of debate around the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it is within the store, it is completely legal. “There’s seemingly nothing illegal about that. You’re still on the company’s premises and their reason to do it is to prevent thefts,” Dowlatshahi confirms.
  2. However, if they are chasing you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location matters,” he explained. “If you’re outside of the store you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of theft and that you have to show your receipt, I think that’s a bit of a different situation because now you’re on your way.”
  3. While customers are allowed to say no to receipt checks, it may cause issues if you do and the store suspects you of stealing. “You can say no, maybe it creates an unnecessary hassle for yourself because now you may have the police come to your house and follow up,” said Dowlatshahi.
  4. If you are being barred from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you could have a legal case — but the store must have held you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus for doing so,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a customer has been emotionally traumatized by being held for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] to sue.”
  5. “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s just a really simple thing to do. If you didn’t steal anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

COSTLY MISTAKES

Retail leaders have said their companies are losing over $100 billion every year due to ‘shrink’ — or product loss including theft.

Some stores have had to shut down as a result.

The Walmart in Aurora, Colorado — just east of Denver — recently gave shoppers just a few weeks’ notice that it would permanently close next month.

Other locations have opted to stay open but remove all of their self-check machines.

Walmart fans in ShrewsburyMissouri — a suburb of St. Louis – learned on Friday that their store would begin taking out their self-checkout machines on Sunday.
