On X, formerly Twitter, users are sharing a status that has made the rounds on social media by those who are boycotting self-checkouts and their accompanying receipt checks.

“Just saw this posted on Facebook, and I figured it was good enough for here, too,” one user wrote.

“You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like they used to be,” the post adds before calling others to share it on their social media.

In response, one shopper explained how she avoids the hassle by using her phone and how the technique is encouraged by stores that offer the digital service.

Costco bosses have confirmed that the measure is purely “standard practice,” per the retailer’s website.

They revealed the policy is the company’s most effective way of ensuring accuracy.

Receipt checks also ensure customers have been charged appropriately, per the retailer.

However, though some shoppers are refusing to show their receipts, it is not unlawful for a store worker to make the request.

In fact, refusal to cooperate could give them the right to detain the shopper, according to legal experts.
