The incident happened on Tuesday, April 22 around 5:38 p.m., when City of Poughkeepsie Police officers were conducting an investigation into suspected drug activity near Main Street and Rose Street, the department said on Wednesday, April 23.

Police said the man, later identified as Jeremy Davis, 31, ran off as officers approached him for an interview. He ran through the nearby Dollar General, crossed through multiple backyards, and ultimately entered a private residence in an attempt to evade capture, police said.

The homeowners were inside at the time and did not know Davis, according to investigators. He was taken into custody without further incident.

During the chase, Davis allegedly discarded a quantity of crack cocaine, which officers said they recovered.

Davis, who is on state parole and has prior felony convictions, was charged with second-degree burglary, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence, and obstructing governmental administration.

He was processed at police headquarters and held pending arraignment.
