RECEIPT checks frustrate a Walmart shopper so they have instructed others on how to avoid them.
The Walmart shopper insists receipt checks can not be enforced without probable cause.
The advice came in response to another shopper’s post on Facebook.
“OK, anybody else gets truly annoyed when Walmart asks to see your receipt?” Carol Dj Jenkins said in a post.
“Like you already made me check out my own stuff but now you wanna make sure I did it right?
“Get rid of self-checkout and hire cashiers.”

Walmart shopper Michael Willoughby replied with their frustration towards receipt checks as well.
He explained there are a few options you can do when confronted about your receipt.
“Yup, I refuse,” Willoughby said.
“If they ask anymore I ask them if they are accusing me of theft, then request a manager.

“Law states that if you are not in a store that has a membership that only the Loss Prevention Team may stop and detain you, and then only until law enforcement arrives.
“They don’t send them as it pretty much accuses you of theft instantly, defaming your character.”
Willoughby suggests sticking up for yourself so you don’t get pushed around by staff.
“Moral of the story, don’t be a sheep,” he added.
“Tell them no thanks politely and keep walking.
“If they come at you, ask them if they are accusing you of theft and if defaming your character is worth the lawsuit.
“They won’t bother you anymore.”
MIXED OPINIONS
A few other customers replied to the post to express their annoyance over the matter as well.
“Exactly what I do, it’s just the gaul of even asking is what irritates me,” this user said.
“If I was carrying out something like a tv, sure but a bag?”
Another user said, “I always tell them no thank you. It’s not a club so you don’t have to provide the receipt.”
Top 5 receipt checking tips from a lawyer

Camron Dowlatshahi, a Los Angeles attorney, spoke to The U.S. Sun about receipt checks and customer’s rights and options when it came to being asked to show your receipt.
- There has been a lot of debate around the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it is within the store, it is completely legal. “There’s seemingly nothing illegal about that. You’re still on the company’s premises and their reason to do it is to prevent thefts,” Dowlatshahi confirms.
- However, if they are chasing you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location matters,” he explained. “If you’re outside of the store you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of theft and that you have to show your receipt, I think that’s a bit of a different situation because now you’re on your way.”
- While customers are allowed to say no to receipt checks, it may cause issues if you do and the store suspects you of stealing. “You can say no, maybe it creates an unnecessary hassle for yourself because now you may have the police come to your house and follow up,” said Dowlatshahi.
- If you are being barred from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you could have a legal case — but the store must have held you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus for doing so,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a customer has been emotionally traumatized by being held for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] to sue.”
- “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s just a really simple thing to do. If you didn’t steal anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

However, a couple of other shoppers had reverse opinions and said they agreed with the receipt checks.
“With all the theft it doesn’t bother me at all,” one user said.
“The employee is only doing what they are told to do by managers. Don’t get mad at them,” another user said.

“They hate doing it too I’m sure.”
“Acting belligerent will cause a rise in suspicion and a hassle and that’s on you in how you choose to act. The staff doesn’t get paid enough for an altercation,” this user said.
