Dollar General’s new ‘line buster’ policy stops shoppers scanning on their own – after self-checkout axed in 12k stores

DOLLAR General has reportedly implemented a new store and staff policy since it axed self-checkouts in 12,000 stores nationwide.

This U-turn has supposedly been aided by a staff manual that has told Dollar General employees how to navigate the stores’ dramatic changes.

The chain’s CEO revealed that the company had removed the self-service kiosks from around 12,000 locations in a May earning call, The U.S Sun previously reported.

CEO Todd Vasos said this was done in response to shrink, which is an industry term for loss of goods through theft or misplacement.

Dollar General has therefore served customers using traditional cashiers at these stores.

Despite this, a reported manual for staff to use in the wake of these huge in-store changes was shared by the MailOnline.

Stores will not take this technology out of their stores but will have these machines cornered off so customers cannot use them.

The “Line Buster Register Basics” manual reportedly told staff that the kiosks can temporarily be opened only under specific circumstances.

They will be used if the lines for cashiers become long but shoppers will not be able to check themselves out.

The new system, named “line buster register,” would have staff scan the items for the customer and check them out.

This means customers would not be able to use the machines themselves.

“LineBuster register assistance is needed when three or more customers are in line at a primary register,” the manual reportedly said.

The alleged manual also told staff to engage in conversation and pleasantries with the shoppers as they checked them out.

This reported manual even gave shoppers a response to hand out to customers if they had questions.

“Q – “Why can I no longer ring myself out at Dollar General,”” the manual wrote.

“A – “Dollar General has changed the functionality of our registers to provide more assistance serving customers.””

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

“Q – “Why are you insisting on helping, don’t you trust me?””

“A – “Of course we trust you, we just want to assist you and improve our service.””

GENERAL CHANGE

This checkout U-turn has not been the only change the retailer has made in recent months, The U.S. Sun has previously reported.

The company revealed that it has planned to open new stores and even renovate its old branches.
