At least 16 DC area locations were scheduled to close this weekend. Here’s a list.
WASHINGTON — Morning coffee has just gotten harder to access for the D.C. area as at least 16 Starbucks locations were scheduled to close across the DMV. Some stores were set to close as early as Saturday.
Nationwide, and in Canada, Starbucks was set to close nearly 400 stores and layoff more than 1,000 workers.
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said Thursday that a review of the company’s stores identified locations where the chain wasn’t making enough of a profit.
“Each year, we open and close coffeehouses for a variety of reasons, from financial performance to lease expirations,” Niccol wrote. “This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult.”
Workers at impacted locations reported to WUSA9 that their employment statuses were uncertain on Saturday. An employee at the Starbucks on L Street that a corporate representative had told her the chances she would be laid off was 50-50.
Other employees told WUSA9 that Starbucks said it would give out more information about their employment statuses on Sunday — the first day after closures were scheduled to take effect.
Some employees reported that they had learned about their locations closing through their managers, news sources or checking the app to see if their location had hours past this weekend.
