Different states shop differently online.
A new survey reveals which states have customers who are the most frequent shoppers and which states have the highest spenders online.
Nearly three-quarters (74%) of Oregon residents place an online order at least once a week, narrowly ahead of Utah (73%) and Nevada (72%), according to a nationwide survey of 2,000 U.S. consumers from e-commerce marketing company Omnisend.
Connecticut leads in online spending, with 14% of residents spending $500–$1,000 a month online, followed by Kentucky (12.1%) and Washington (10.5%). High-spending respondents from Connecticut were most likely to shop online at Amazon and Target. In general, only 1.8% of survey respondents across the U.S. break the $1,000 monthly online spending ceiling.
“Frequent checkouts don’t always translate into bigger budgets,” said Marty Bauer, e-commerce expert at Omnisend. “Shoppers in states like Utah may be driven more by convenience and deals than by high-ticket items.”
When it comes to daily online buying, 16% of Louisiana residents make an online purchase every day, more than double the U.S. average.
Overall, Minnesota residents reported the lowest frequency of shopping online, with 24% saying they engage in e-commerce only a few times a year.
The survey also indicates that frequent online shopping and high spending don’t always correlate. Four out of five Utah online shoppers keep monthly e-commerce spend below $100, despite ranking second for weekly purchases.
