Marcos Veloz, 25, of New York, NY, was taken into custody in New Rochelle on Saturday, March 15, after police linked him to a pair of commercial burglaries in the city, the New Rochelle Police Department announced on Wednesday, March 19.
The investigation began around 4:50 a.m. on March 15, when officers responded to a commercial burglar alarm at 212 North Ave. Upon arrival, they found the front window shattered with a rock, confirming a break-in.
Officers quickly developed leads and soon identified Veloz as a suspect. When they stopped him, he was carrying a prybar, hatchet, and mallet—all consistent with the break-in method used at the scene, police said.
He was arrested without incident before any further crimes could occur, authorities said.
During their investigation, officers noted that the crime bore striking similarities to an earlier burglary on Wednesday, March 12 at a business on Main Street. In that case, entry was also gained forcibly, according to New Rochelle Police.
Further leads linked Veloz to both burglaries, and he was charged in connection with each incident, the department added.
Veloz was charged with:
- Two counts of third-degree burglary;
- Two counts of third-degree criminal mischief;
- Possession of burglar’s tools.
