Boy, 13, fatally shot outside NYC Dunkin’ Donuts becomes organ donor – saving 4 lives, including teen his own age

The 13-year-old boy gunned down during a clash with an older teen outside a Queens Dunkin Donuts last week has donated his organs – saving the lives of four people, including one his own age who received his heart.

The grieving family of high school freshman Sanjay Samuel – shot in the head on the morning of Sept. 21 outside the Springfield Gardens coffee franchise – “generously said yes” to letting their slain son’s vital organs be donated to those in dire need on the transplant waitlist, the non-profit organization LiveOnNY announced Monday.

The recipient of Sanjay’s heart was just 13 years old, while a 15-year-old also received his liver, the organization said.

Two adults in their 50s received both of the boy’s lungs, his pancreas and one kidney, according to the non-profit.

The organ recipients live in New York, Ohio and Washington, DC.

“LiveOnNY is humbled and honored to be the stewards of these precious gifts of life so that Sanjay and others may live on,” Leonard Achan, president and CEO of LiveOnNY, said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with them during this very difficult time.”

Sanjay was shot around 8:20 a.m. in what NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny described as a possible gang-related group fight.

The alleged gunman, 16-year-old Jaysohn Sykes, pulled up on a Razor scooter and got into a scuffle with Sanjay before pulling a loaded semiautomatic firearm out of his sweatshirt pocket, Queens prosecutors said.

Sykes allegedly bashed Samuel in the face with the weapon and punched him before firing toward the younger teen’s head, the DA’s office said.

The suspect then fled before surrendering to cops on Friday. He is now facing charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon – which could land him 25 years in jail if convicted, prosecutors said.

Samuel’s mother previously pointed the finger at social media for its role in her son’s untimely death.

“This phone is a devil,” Velene Griffith said last week. “These kids, they talk too much on social media. They live on the phone, on social media to hype themselves up, to look grown, to look big and bad.”
