Barry revealed that Best Buy has used more traditional methods like increasing the number of staff in-store and keeping in-person cashier lanes.

Best Buy has also placed staff at store entrances and exits as well as other measures.

The CEO claimed that the chain had retail theft under control and that these measures had been successful, in a call to reporters on November 21, according to CNN Business.

Barry said: “In certain parts of the country in particular, there is a real issue around theft and organized crime.

“With that being said… we have not called out material impacts to our business as a result of shrink for at least the last two years.”

Electronics are one of the most targeted items by organized retail crime groups, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2023 Retail Security Survey.

Best Buy has also been able to compete with giants like Amazon due to its strong customer service support, according to CNN Business.

This level of customer service would also need lots of trained staff to meet demand.

Other retailers have been encouraged, by crime prevention experts, to adopt these strategies.

Best Buy’s approach to in-store shopping and combating theft has differed greatly from other chains.

For example, many Walmart stores across the country have reduced the number of in-person checkouts which has forced many customers to use self-checkouts.

Many customers have taken to social media to share their anger and displeasure at policies like receipt checks or locking items away.

A TikToker shared her shock when a makeup aisle at her store was locked behind glass doors seemingly overnight, The US Sun previously reported.

Other stores like Kroger have also increased their self-checkout presence and a company it owns introduced one powered by artificial intelligence.

Harris Teeter implemented this technology earlier this year, The US Sun has previously reported.

Some stores placed cameras above self-checkouts to watch customers and focus on how they scan their goods.

Videos are then analyzed by Everseen Visual AI before any issues or discrepancies are raised on the machine to customers.
