MONTHS after Walmart changed its self-checkout policies, customers are still frustrated over the effects on customer service.

Falling in line with other retailers like Dollar General and Target, Walmart has made a shift in recent months to deprioritize self-checkout.

In doing so, some checkouts were designated for Walmart+ shoppers only while others were closed entirely.

To make matters worse, unlike other comparable retailers, Walmart also checks customer receipts before shoppers leave the building.

Receipt checks already anger customers, who cried out after being “treated like criminals,” but when paired with reduced convenience because of self-checkout changes, shopper ire is on the rise.

One customer, @stephenhoe4813 on X, shared their perspective on the checkout situation.

“Put some got damn cashiers on the registers at Walmart!!!” they raged as a solution.

“You got 75 self-checkouts but 1 damn line open ???” they continued in question.

To add insult to injury, the poster was appalled that after their wait and labor, the store still required a receipt to be shown.

“And you wanna check my receipt after I did all that work???!!” the poster concluded.

Other shoppers feel similarly, complaining about Walmart’s checkout situation.

Many point out the lack of lanes and lack of cashiers.

Walmart user filmed failing to scan at self-checkout says he’s not a thief – he has receipts to prove what he was doing

“@Walmart at a Walmart today, 44 check out lanes, of those 44, I counted 10 non-self checkouts, 3 of which were manned,” called out another customer.

“All other lanes, self-checkouts/Walmart+ checkout out. What’s next, charge your customers to do their own changes?” they challenged.

“Went to check out at your San Tan Valley, [Arizona] location, 1/2 stores self-checkouts closed, only 3 open lanes with workers scanning, and 30-40 ppl in line at other self-checkout,” shared another.

“Staff your f’n stores appropriately,” they went on to demand.

Walmart has yet to respond to request for comment by The U.S. Sun.

TARGET TROUBLE

Walmart is not the only store where customers are complaining about the checkout setup.

Target has also faced pushback from customers after they put an item limit on self-checkout and reduced the amount of open lanes.

“My Target store has not opened any new lanes since your self-checkout change,” protested one shopper from Ohio.

“Lines are getting outrageous.”

Another shopper went to go check out at a traditional register and noticed there were “no checkers.”

“The line for self-checkout was 20 deep,” she recalled.

“I abandoned my cart and left.”

To conclude, she posed a question to the retailer.

“Do they actually think this is a good business model??” she said.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.
