Cybersecurity risk report: Indiana ranks second nationally for cybercrime complaints

INDIANA — New research analyzing 2024 FBI data reveals that Indiana is the state second most at risk of cybercrime, reporting a rate of complaints per capita that is nearly triple that of most of the country.

A study by Click Intelligence, which analyzed data from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), found that Indiana ranks second among all U.S. states for the highest number of cybercrime complaints per 100,000 residents.

The study defines cybercrime complaints as any criminal activity involving a computer, network, or digital device where data or money is stolen, including credit card fraud, phishing, and cryptocurrency scams.

According to the analysis, Indiana’s data for 2024 shows:

  • Complaints per 100,000 people: 342
  • Average losses per victim: $5,287
  • Total losses: $125,093,323

Indiana’s rate of 342 complaints per 100,000 people placed it second only to Alaska, which reported an outlier rate of 915 complaints per 100,000 people. Following Indiana in the top five most targeted states were Nevada (328), Delaware (267), and Arizona (265).

National Financial Impact

The findings underscore the widespread and growing threat of digital fraud nationwide. While Indiana’s per-victim loss average was $5,287, the study highlighted that victims in Wyoming suffered the most significant financial damage, losing an average of $31,592 per victim.

Nationally, the FBI reported over 859,000 internet crime complaints in 2024, with total losses surpassing $16 billion—a nearly $4 billion jump from the previous year.

James Owen, co-founder of Click Intelligence, commented on the gravity of the data. “These results highlight how serious the cybercrime threat has become across the United States,” Owen said. “Even in states with fewer reports, like Wyoming, where victims lost an average of $31,592 each, the financial damage can still be devastating.”

The states with the lowest cybercrime rates were Mississippi (104 complaints per 100,000 residents), North Dakota (111 complaints), and Nebraska (130 complaints).
