New system streamlines incident management, speeds up processing times and enhances road safety across Aotearoa

Verra Mobility, a global leader in smart mobility and road safety technology has announced the successful implementation of its cloud-based infringement and case management system for the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) road safety cameras.

When NZTA took over the responsibility for managing road safety cameras and the processing of incident files – a task previously under the control of NZ Police – the organisation determined the legacy back-office information and communications technology (ICT) solution in place fell short of achieving the operational requirements, and made the decision to procure a best-in-class ICT solution that was fit for purpose.

Working to a tight timeframe in response to the NZTA’s urgent need, Verra Mobility was selected to partner with NZTA to implement Alcyon, a modern cloud-based infringement and case management system that integrates with multiple camera vendors and external government systems including the Motor Vehicle Register, Traffic Offence History (TOH), Ministry of Justice (MoJ), and the Common Payments System (CPS), forming the core of NZTA’s road safety strategy.

In Alcyon, Verra Mobility provided NZTA with a modern, scalable, and secure cloud-based infringement and case management system to support NZTA’s critical role in road safety and enforcement. The solution plays an integral part in New Zealand’s Road Safety Objectives, which focuses on safer roads, safer drivers, safer vehicles and resetting our approach to speed limits.

Verra Mobility worked closely with NZTA to ensure rapid and successful deployment in just six months. This included daily engagement, system showcases, swift responses to requested changes, and prioritisation guidance based on operational needs.

While the initial rollout was a sprint, the platform continues to evolve with new features and updates being regularly delivered to support long-term operational efficiency and road safety outcomes. This ongoing development ensures the system evolves with user needs and national road safety requirements.

“This project was not just a technology upgrade, but a huge step forward in supporting public safety. By modernising how we manage and process road safety camera incidents, we are ensuring faster and more accurate enforcement that ultimately will help save lives. We now have the agility and scalability to keep pace with changing demands while maintaining a strong focus on safety outcomes,” said Aaron Pratley, Domain Lead Transport Services and IoT NZTA.

NZTA now benefits from a future-ready system that strengthens its ability to manage road safety and camera operations. The solution brings greater efficiency, scalability, and flexibility to respond to evolving safety and enforcement needs. It also reflects the impact and benefits of a strong and effective partnership between Verra Mobility and government to achieve road safety goals and drive innovation in public service delivery.

“Delivering a fit-for-purpose solution within a tight timeframe, and with critical operational implications, required a strong partnership grounded in trust, collaboration, and a shared vision. The ability to move quickly without compromising on quality is a testament to the strength of the relationship between our teams. Together we have built a platform that meets today’s needs and is ready to evolve with NZTA in the future,” said Steven Crutchfield, Senior VP and MD, International, Verra Mobility.
