17 arrested, 4 charged with felonies as thousands gathered for anti-ICE protests in downtown Chicago

Seventeen protesters were arrested Tuesday evening as thousands gathered for downtown anti-ICE protests.

Nathan Sol, 20, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer and 33-year-old Yoni Salgado and Johnathan Ellison, 37, were charged with a single count of aggravated battery to a peace officer, Chicago police said.

Asnat Berestizhevsky, 27, was charged with felony criminal damage to government property under $500, battery and resisting an officer or aiding escape.

Ten others were charged with misdemeanors including battery, resisting arrest, reckless conduct and criminal defacement of property under $500, officials said.

Those charged with felonies were scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. Charges were still pending for two individuals, police said.

There were some skirmishes between police and protesters as officers — some clutching batons — tried to hold their ground. In one clash near Washington and State, protesters could be heard screaming “no violence” and “let him go” as officers tried to detain a man in a bicycle helmet.

A 66-year-old woman broke her arm in a hit-and-run when a red 2003 Kia Spectra drove through a group of protesters in the street, officials said.

The victim, who broke her arm as the car fled the scene, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released, officials said.
