Police in Concord, Massachusetts were alerted by loss prevention staff, at a Walmart store at 344 Loudon Road, that a suspicious device had been found at a register, on October 19, according to a press release.

A Market Basket store on 80 Storrs Street also reported that a device had been found attached to a register in their express lane checkout, on October 27.

Credit Card Skimmers are devices that look like normal card readers but an important detail in the chip could reveal its truth.

Concord Police said: “A telltale sign with these particular “skimmers” is that the card chip reader slot is inoperable and appears “jammed,” causing the customer to swipe the card so that the magnetic reader can steal the card information.”

The police also alleged that both of these devices had been installed by the same two people.

Pictures from store CCTV footage of the two alleged suspects have been released by officials in their search.

It is unknown how many shoppers have become victims of this credit card skimmer scam.

Police also claimed that they are investigating a string of other similar incidents across New England.

Shoppers shared their frustration at the news and the scam, according to NBC Boston.

Market Basket shopper Hope Moore said: “I think those people are terrible, especially this holiday season and the season of gratefulness and thankfulness.

“I understand a lot of people are in tough times but that is a really sad thing for someone to do.”

Another shopper, Lois Hugh, blasted the scam for the effect it could have on low-income people.

Hugh said: “It’s unfair because people work hard for their money or they’re on low income like I am.

“So, if that ever happened to me I would just be so upset and say why did they do this?

“Go out and get a job, work for your money.”
